Why Does Timber Split ?
At certain times of the year-especially during the warmer months – we sometimes receive emails from customers who have noticed splits or cracks appearing in their gazebo posts or timber. The first thought is often “Oh no, is this defective timber?” But the truth is, it’s a completely natural occurrence and nothing to be worried about.
Timber Is a Natural Product
Unlike man‑made materials, timber is alive in the sense that it responds to its surroundings. Changes in temperature and humidity cause the wood to expand and contract. When the surface dries out faster than the core, you may see splits appear – this is known as checking.
Why It Happens More in Warm Weather
In the warmer months, the heat draws moisture from the outer layers of the timber more quickly. This can cause the outer fibres to shrink and pull apart slightly, resulting in those visible splits. In colder or damper months, these may even close back up as the wood takes in more moisture again.
Does This Affect Strength?
The short answer – no. These natural splits are a surface characteristic and do not compromise the strength or durability of the timber. In fact, if you visit our display gazebos (some of which have been standing for years), you’ll see the same features in the posts, and they remain rock solid!.
Caring for Your Timber
While you can’t prevent checking completely, treating your timber with a good quality wood protective treatment is always worthwhile and it is something that we recommend that you do. It will help slow down moisture loss, add protection from the elements, and keep your structure looking its best.
In Summary
If you spot a split in your gazebo post during summer, don’t panic – it’s simply the timber reacting to the weather. It’s part of the charm of owning a natural, high‑grade wooden structure and is a sign you’ve got a product built from real, solid wood – not something artificial that will look tired and worn in a few years!
